Katong is a residential area in the east of Singapore near the seafront. Formerly located by the sea, land was reclaimed all the way to East Coast Park to provide more land for housing and recreational purposes due to shortage of land in the late 1960s after Singapore gained independence. Katong was the location of many villas and mansions of the wealthy in the late 19th to the mid 20th centuries, who made their fortunes in the Far East and built seaside resorts, villas and manors along the beachfront of Katong, beginning from Katong Park to the end of the East Coast. Newer houses as well as cluster homes also bloomed in this heritage area. 
High-rise condos and apartments along Meyer Road, Amber Road and Marine Parade Road also gives an unparalleled view of the eastern side, ie East Coast.
Katong is also home to some of the most popular schools in Singapore. Among Primary schools include the venerable Tao Nan primary school, as well as Haig Girls’ school. Chung Cheng High Main, Tanjong Katong Secondary and Tanjong Katong Girls schools have been in the same location for decades. Dunman High School is also amongst the most popular bilingual schools. Victoria School and Victoria Junior College are also in the vicinity in the Marine Parade area.
Katong‘s rich cultural mix has contributed to its unique cuisine – most notably Peranakan (Straits Chinese) cuisine. In particular, a spicy Malay noodle soup called Peranakan laksa was made famous even beyond Singapore shores. Katong Laksa originated from Joo Chiat area. The founder lived in Tembling Road/Joo Chiat Terrace initally before moving his business into the eating house at East Coast Road/Ceylon Road. Because the Katong people loved his laksa, it has come to be known as the Katong laksa throughout the world in Hong Kong and New York.
Shopping is also a hip in the area. From the evergreen of Parkway Parade to the new mall of i12 Katong mall, Katong is home to some of the most notable shopping belts in the east.
Accessibility for Katong is easy. Buses are plentiful to Town, Orchard and Airport. The new MRT line is in the works.
